Documentary: In His Own Nature

A love for nature, a life of achievement: proving that learning disabilities are no barrier to greatness.

In June 2023, John McDowell was honoured with the British Empire Medal (B.E.M) as part of the King’s Birthday Honours List, recognising nearly three decades of volunteer work in Buckinghamshire and Berkshire’s beloved parks and beyond.
Our film takes you into John’s world—a resident of Reach Upton Court for 28 years and a man who has devoted his life to community and nature. From his weekly contributions to local parks to quiet moments of reflection and celebration, we follow John’s journey as he prepares for and receives this prestigious honour.

Through heartfelt interviews with John, his mother, and those who have supported him, the film showcases the remarkable collaboration between family, care providers, and Buckinghamshire Council that has enabled John to flourish. It is a powerful reminder of what people with learning disabilities can achieve when given the right support—a story of love, dedication, and the extraordinary impact of a life devoted to giving back.
